Hurricane Prep!

I love weather.  I mean, I seriously love weather.

When I was a kid I use to get so excited when we’d have a serve thunderstorm warning.  When the storm either missed us or it was weak, I would get so upset.  My poor parents, they would actually send me to my room because I would get so frustrated by the inaccurate forecasting.

My dream was to become a meteorologist, so I applied to my dream schools, The University of Oklahoma and The University of Nebraska.  I didn’t get into OU but I did get into Nebraska!!  Although it was my dream to go to school for meteorology, a NCAA track and field scholarship to the University of Texas- San Antonio kept me in Texas.  I think it turned out for the better as I don’t know how well I would have done in atmospheric physics classes.

Although I didn’t become a meteorologist, I still follow weather closely and am obsessed with it.  Secretly, I AM THRILLED THAT IRENE IS HEADED THIS WAY.  Now I do respect that it’s a powerful storm and can cause a lot of damage, which I do not want!  For those who haven’t been though a hurricane, it is important to do a little preparation.  I have been in hurricanes where the power goes out for a day or two and we lose water, so here are some of my recommendations.

Hurricane Supply List

  • Flashlights and/or batteries for your flashlights
  • 2-3 gallons of water
  • Non perishable healthy snack foods
  • Fresh fruit
  • Board games! These will save your life if you’re anything like me.  I get so incredibly bored when the power goes out.
  • Battery operated radio
  • And according to my Mom, peanut butter!!

To Do List

  • Have a little cash on hand
  • Fill your gas tank
  • Move your car way from any trees!! Trust me, this is really important.
  • Make sure all of your electronics are charged!!  Cell phones, laptop, portable DVD player, camera, etc.
  • Put important documents into a waterproof bag or container in case of flooding

After work on Thursday I went to Target to pick up some hurricane supplies.  I haven’t shopped at Target in ages, so I was totally like a kid in a candy store!

I don’t know if it’s because graduate school just started, but I was immediately sucked into the office supplies, organizational, and day planner isles.  While wondering the isles, I found this awesome meal plan dry erase chart which can be posted on the refrigerator.  The planner is by Mead as part of their Organizher line.

The 3 columns are for Lunch, Dinner, and Notes.  The 7 rows are for each day of the week (Monday-Sunday).  I am incredibly excited to use this as another tool for meal planning and grocery shopping prep.  The planner came with a grocery list pad too!

I eventually made my way back to the grocery section of Target to pick up some water…

but the shelves were EMPTY!! I guess I’ll be going to the grocery store Saturday morning with the rest of the world.  While I was there, a girl saw a few bottles of Perrier water and said “this will work”… ummm, clearly you’ve never had your water go out or been in a hurricane!  I’d love to see her when she goes to brush her teeth or wash her hair and all she has is Perrier.  Priceless!

Eventually I made by way back to the electronics section to buy batteries but I completely forgot about my battery mission when I saw the movie section.  I always stop by the movies when I’m at Target as they tend to have lots of movies on sale from $3-$7.50.  You really can’t beat that!  Although I didn’t get any movies on sale, I did buy Win Win!

I had heard that this was an amazing movie but I never made it to the theater when it was here in DC.  Although the movie was full price, I think it’s the perfect movie to watch on a crazy weather weekend, electricity permitting.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

  1. I wanted to be an author for a while. I specifically wrote a paper about wanting to be a “fiction author” when I was in middle school. Yeah…that fizzled.

Then I wanted to be a nurse until I job shadowed in high school and realized the smell of hospitals really bother me, so I went for teacher instead.

  2. I think there were so many jobs I wanted when I was a kid. Own a bakery, be a teacher, have a restaurant, live in my parents house forever, haha!
