A Scaleless Summer

Are you ever consumed by the number you see on the scale?  Do you weigh yourself weekly, daily, even twice a day to see how your weight has fluctuated?  Are you elated when the number goes down and discouraged when the number goes up?

So much affects our body weight on a daily basis.  Eating a lot of salt the day before, drinking lots of water, drinking too little water, having just finished a meal, not eating enough food, and consuming lots of fiber are just a few things that seem to affect what my scale says.

The best way to see how your body weight has changed is to see how it changes over a long period of time.  Have you ever thought of weighing yourself just once a month or just once a year (on your birthday for example)?  Why are we so attached to our bathroom scales?

This summer, I’m going scaleless!

From June 21-September 22 I will not step on my scale.  My goal of course is to continue to lose weight, but also to not get discouraged if my weight fluctuates from week to week.  Yesterday I weighed in at 217 lbs.

My Plan

  • Continue to plan out my meals for the week ahead on Sundays
  • Utilize what I have in my pantry, minimizing what I purchase at the grocery store
  • Have a least half of my plate at each meal consist of fruits or vegetables
  • Use moderation when eating, especially when eating my favorite foods (ice cream, pizza, peanut butter)
  • Workout 4-5 times a week

My Goals

  • Do not weigh myself
  • Lose 15-20 pounds (the summer is roughly 13 weeks long)
  • I would just about die if I got below 200 pounds!!
  • Enjoy every bit of this summer
  • Learn more about myself and what life is like without a bathroom scale

Will you take this challenge?  Will you go scaleless this summer?

  1. That sounds like a great plan! I’ve always wanted to go scaleless for a long period of time, but never actually had the gumption to do it. I have however, recently ditched the calorie counting and the heart rate monitor.

  2. Wahoo!! I totally support this! I’m not a huge scale person myself – I went through a phase of it but ultimately I think I’m much happier focusing on being HEALTHY than on being skinny 🙂

Your goals sound like great ones and I’m SURE you’ll achieve them!

  3. I really love your realistic goals. I use my Wii Fit and usually weigh myself once a day when I’m on it…….I haven’t been on it for almost a month though. I understand what you mean – I feel elated when I lose the slighest bit of weight, but devestated when I gain! I like the Wii Fit because I can look at my graph and see that I really am losing weight OVERALL. So, I think your idea is great, because you won’t have those disappointments if the “scale says” you went up. I can’t wait to see what happens September 21st!

  5. […] Today has been great so far and I must attribute it to my evening last night.  After work I took a grad school quiz and finished up my course work for the week.  Woop Woop!  One class’ work done for the week, one class to go.  I then headed to Chinatown to meet my boyfriend for a sneak preview of Horrible Bosses.  I knew I wouldn’t make it through the movie without some dinner, so I first headed to Potbelly’s to grab a sub for my BF and I to split.  Although I love the “wreck” sandwich, I opted for the ham and provolone sub. I’m also working really hard to see a great number on the scale come September 22. […]

  7. Heya! I came across your blog from someone elses (can’t remember who sorry!) but I love this post! I used to gym every day and some days the scales would read between 2-3 kg different and it would frustrate me no end. I even went on different scales at the same gym and it said different things. WTF?! Anyway, I think this is a great post, and I love that your goals are realistic. All the best with your Scaleless Summer…since it’s winter here, I think I’ll do a Scaleless Winter! So glad I came across your blog 😀

    • Thank you so much for your kind words!! I love that you can have a scaleless winter!! I can honestly say that I’m having a great summer and know that I’ve lost weight. It has really helped me to focus on how I feel and what I’m eating. Best of luck and thank you for reading my blog!
